Petra

Description

Petra is a sizeable seaside settlement on the northern shore of Lesvos, 57 km from Mytilini. The local economy is based on tourism as numerous tourists each summer flock to the beautiful, wide beach and its sites. The main tourist site is the Panagia Glykofilousa Church at the top of 114 stair steps, situated on a rock in the middle of the town. This rock lent its name to the town (“petra” = rock). The Aghios Nikolaos Church is another remarkable religious site of this town. The Vareltzidaina mansion is yet another notable building built in the second half of the 18th century according to the Western Macedonian architectural style with internal decoration consisting of unique murals and carved woodwork. There are more neighboring villages equally picturesque and beautiful, such as Lafiona, Skoutaros, Stypsi and Ypsilometopo.
